Following a 1-1 stalemate with Manchester City in the second round of group stage matches, AS Roma play host to last year’s semi-finalists Bayern Munich.
The Italian and German behemoths were in a similar predicament four years ago, when they met in the 2010 Group Stages of the Champions League. Roma edged that fixture, thanks to a late penalty by Francesco Totti, who converted his first ever goal in England during the aforementioned battle with City.
Back in 2010, both sides qualified from the group stage, and thanks to a strong comeback from CSKA Moscow tonight, history may well repeat itself, thanks to a 2-2 draw in Russia. It puts Munich and Roma well ahead of the other two teams in the group.
Roma dispatched Chievo 3-0 in their latest Serie A outing, and are currently embroiled in a tense fight with perennial nemeses Juventus for the lead of the Serie A table, whom they sit one point behind. By contrast, Munich are breezing through this year’s Bundesliga campaign.
The Bavarians thumped bottom side Werder Bremen 6-0 in their latest fixture without breaking a sweat. With Borussia Dortmund falling 2-1 to newly-promoted Cologne, there is very little in their way of the Bundesliga title this season.
Given their dominance, it could be the case that Bayern have a little more energy to edge this match.
